As if general aches and pains weren’t enough, some pregnant women find themselves with an even more painful condition: sciatica during pregnancy. This condition occurs when the baby’s head presses against the mother’s sciatic nerve, which runs down the spine, into the pelvis and upper leg area.  The symptoms are shooting pains or numbness in the lower back, sometimes radiating over the buttocks and down the thighs.  The numbness can sometimes be paralyzing.

Sciatica during pregnancy can in theory, occur anytime during your term, but is most likely to appear during the second and third trimesters, when the baby’s head is largest and pressing down the most.  Unfortunately, when the sciatic nerve is impacted the pain can be severe enough to be immobilizing.  Because it is caused directly by the positioning of the baby, often not much can be done about it until the baby is born. The trouble is compounded because hormonal changes cause loosening in tendons and ligaments as the body is prepared for childbirth.  This creates greater instability in the back and pelvic area, and a greater likelihood that pressure will be put on the nerve.

Unfortunately, there is no reliable way to prevent sciatica during pregnancy. What is known however, is that women who are healthy and in good physical condition are less likely to suffer from its most debilitating effects.  This is because good muscle tone means they are better able to support the additional weight of pregnancy, and their range of motion tends to be better, even when the sciatic nerve is impacted.

Some cases of sciatica during pregnancy are severe enough that prescription medication is required, but most doctors prefer to treat pregnant women in other ways, if possible.  For a bad case, bed rest is usually recommended, along with a course of deep tissue massage, and alternating hot and cold compresses on the affect area.

There are some healthy habits you can cultivate as well.  Be mindful of your posture.  The more you slouch, the more likely you are to put pressure on the nerve.  Wear flat shoes, or keep the heel low so your weight is more evenly distributed.  Sleep on a firm mattress, or even on the floor, with a pillow between your knees. When you get out of bed, first roll onto one side, and let your legs over the side first. This is when a lot of sciatic nerves are damaged, so be extra careful when getting up.

There are also exercises called “Williams Exercises” that have been specially formulated to combat sciatica during pregnancy. When done correctly, these exercises take pressure off the sciatic muscle and loosen spasms when they occur.  Swimming, walking, and prenatal massage have also been shown to be helpful in treating this condition.  Stretches are also helpful in keeping the muscles around the sciatic nerve from tightening up enough to cause harm.

Sciatica is an unpleasant and painful condition, but if you keep good posture, and perform the right exercises diligently, you just might be able to get it to pass you by.

One of the most common tips to enhance your facial appearance is practicing good hygiene habits. In cases where women are already having problems, they should be sure to wash their faces regularly. Washing your face at least twice a day is a good habit. Pregnant women should use mild soaps on the face.

In other words, products that are scented or dyed may not be right for you. Those soaps, although popular, can cause even more skin problems. It is also a good practice to not scrub the skin. This is particularly important for pregnant women, who have acne issues. It is enough to simply rub the skin while cleaning it.

Moisturizers are also great products for skin problems. These products are good no matter what type of skin you have. Most moisturizers work to strengthen the skin, which is beneficial to getting the appearance you want. Moisturizers can be used several times daily, and can show much progress in improving your skin’s texture.

For women who experience skin that is particularly oily, they may need some different products. Finding an exfoliating product can help with this problem. The existence of too much oil in the skin can promote acne. And pregnant women sometimes experience acne outbreaks. This is why good habits, can act as a preventive method against acne.

Products, which you’ve used in the past for your skin, may be fine during pregnancy. If you use medicated products, though, you need to consult your physician before using these.

With all of the changes, pregnant women undergo, their skin changes, are just another one. Many pregnant women experience itchy skin and acne problems. Some of these cases will include women who have long suffered with acne problems. But others will be experiencing these issues for the first time during their pregnancy.

An itchy skin pregnancy symptom, does not always involve acne problems. In fact, this is sometimes a rare occurrence. It could come and go at random. But for some expectant mothers, itchy skin may be caused by another condition. A condition called cholestasis is often characterized by having itchy skin.

Cholestasis is only contracted by pregnant women. When a pregnant woman is diagnosed with this, treatment by her physician is necessary. Cholestasis is essentially a condition where bile cannot flow from the liver, as usual. A blockage develops, and the expectant mother begins experiencing symptoms, of which itching is one.

Fortunately for those pregnant women who will be diagnosed with cholestasis, there is effective treatment even while pregnant. But as is always the case, it is very important to pay close attention to strange symptoms. Some of the symptoms expecting women experience are solely a part of the process. But in some instances, these symptoms can prove that something else is wrong.

For this reason, communicating regularly with your doctor is important. Many women will have acne problems throughout their pregnancy. They may even feel like their going through adolescence all over again. This may not be the most comfortable stage of pregnancy, but at least it can be dealt with.

Finding a good moisturizer is also a good way to treat acne. And when purchasing any skin care products, one should look for those that have been tested by dermatologists. Products that are acne-genic are probably best. There are also many over-the-counter medicated skin gels and lotions. Be sure to contact your physician before using any of these. This is especially important for the safety of the pregnant woman and her unborn child.
