PostHeaderIcon Reading Your Body’s Signs and Signals to Pregnancy

Welcome back!

So, you want to become pregnant! Congratulations on yours and your partner’s decision. I am sure that the two of you have many questions and concerns regarding your decision to become parents. First off, RELAX! And when I say RELAX, I mean just that. Conceiving a healthy baby encompasses many intricate details. Of course the first step is to conceive. Sounds easy huh? Well for most couples it is. But for some, nature takes a little longer. Some women have a hard time distinguishing when they are ovulating and when they are not. And maybe for good reason! We’ll get into reasons why in another article.

This article is about learning how to read your body’s signs and signals to pregnancy. I can’t tell you how important that is for conceiving and conceiving a healthy baby. There are certain tools that can make it easier for you to determine what your body is trying to tell you. We will discuss them throughout this article as well. Ladies, our bodies are like a fine piece of machinery. Every intricate part of that machine, including all the way down to every nut and bolt has a precise job. A good mechanic understands how that machine works and knows how to read the signs and signals to make a proper diagnosis and fix the problem. If just one part of that machine is not working properly, the whole precision for that machine will be off or will possibly shut down completely. Our bodies are the same way! So let’s get started.

The first thing that women should do is start keeping good and ACURATE records of her cycle. For some of you who are detailed oriented, this will be a breeze. What I mean by this, is to invest in some tools (as mentioned earlier in the article) that will make it easier for you to recognize the changes in your body and when they occur. Such tools include a simple calendar or daily planner that is only used by you, preferably a daily planner so that you can make notes. Another good and very helpful tool is a fertility cart or ovulation chart. They both are one in the same. One reason I recommend having a planner as well as fertility chart is because if you lose one, more than likely you will have the other. But even more so, if you are on a special diet or taking certain fertility medications you can accurately record your activity. Sometimes even having a personal diary and writing down your thoughts and feelings can help with the anxiety you maybe feeling. The purpose of the fertility chart is to record your body’s activity such as when you started and completed your period, body temperature as well as a few other things, depending on how sophisticated your chart is. Writing things down on a daily basis and studying what changes take place and when over a few months will help you see what your body’s pattern is.

Another sign that you need to pay attention to are the changes to your cervical mucus. Your mucus will change dramatically over the course of your monthly cycle. As you approach ovulation, your mucus will be clear instead of cloudy and with more elasticity (stringy) instead of flaky. For most women, right after ovulation they will see a significant decrease in discharge (meaning their cervical mucus).

Now let’s talk about your body’s temperature. As women get closer to ovulation her temperature will suddenly rise at least .2 degrees and will last about three days. I recommend that you invest in basal thermometer from your local drugstore or Wal-Mart that can be purchased very inexpensively. Each morning as you awaken and before your feet hit the ground, take your temperature and record it in your planner or fertility chart. Again over the course of a month you will begin to see a pattern.

As ovulation gets closer some women will also experience tender breast, mood swings, headaches, swelling and sudden sharp pains in the abdomen. All of these are signs that ovulation is approaching.

PostHeaderIcon Infertility- Cervical Hostility to Sperm and How to Treat It

Did you know that your body’s cervical mucus could be killing your partner’s sperm? Sounds strange huh? Well it isn’t. This happens to couples more than people realize. This is an issue when a man’s sperm is unable to penetrate the cervix properly in order to get to the egg in the uterus. In this article, we will be discussing what causes this disorder as well what treatment options are available.

When there is an abnormity in a woman’s cervical mucus, there are usually no symptoms that will appear to alert her of the problem, other than infertility. The only way to identify this disorder is through proper testing. There are numerous things that can lead a women’s body to become hostile to her partner’s sperm. Such reasons could be an infection in her lower reproductive tract or there could be an overabundance of anti-sperm antibodies which can actually immobilize the sperm, preventing it from entering the cervix. Other reasons could be that her mucus is too thick and sticky, not compatible with her partner’s sperm or just lacking enough mucus to allow the sperm to move easily.

For whatever the reason or cause of this problem for couples, the good news is that there are treatment options available.

  • For Infections: After proper testing has been completed and it shows that there is an infection present, your doctor will probably prescribe antibiotics that will clear up any signs of the infection.
  • Mucus that is too thick and sticky: Estrogen tablets have been used to help water down cervical mucus as well as guaifenesin. The ingredient guaifenesin is found in some over the counter cough syrups, such as Robitussin.
  • IUI and IVF: Intrauterine insemination and Invitro Fertilization
  • To Stop Antisperm Antibodies From Developing: Steroids are used treat this problem, but they may cause serious side effects.

PostHeaderIcon How To Protect Your Baby Before & During Pregnancy

Folate which is a Vitamin B supplement is very important to have in your diet especially if you are planning on getting pregnant or are already pregnant.  This rich nutrient helps prevent certain birth defects like abnormal spinal cord or brain defect. If you are planning on having a baby it is vital to eat foods rich in this supplement, you can get better results with the nutrient all ready running through your circulation.

When you give your body the best you are giving your baby the opportunity to come into this world healthy and strong without complications.  There are certain things you cannot prevent from happening no matter how healthy you are it’s inevitable as long as you do your part in caring for the health of your born, no matter what happens no blame can be placed on you.  Acting nonchalantly about your condition can lead to serious problems; you should be meticulous about your health.

A Study was done on 3,600 mothers and those who consumed 400 micrograms of folic acid from supplements and foods are 60 percent less likely to put their child at risk of having birth defects. Taking Vitamin B during and before you are pregnant reduces the chances of your child having defects by 50 to 70 percent.  According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention pregnant women should get at least 600 micrograms of Folate daily.

Foods that are rich in Folate are lima beans, dark leafy vegetables, flour, pasta and rice.  A cup of spinach contains 210 micrograms of this nutrient that’s more than half of the daily value for non pregnant women. J. David Erickson, DDS, PhD, an epidemiologist with the National Center of Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities at the Center for Disease Control, says that it is very important that women take folic acid before pregnancy if planning on getting pregnant because birth defects can occur within the first few weeks of the pregnancy.  It is very crucial for women of all childbearing age.

When cooking foods that have Vitamin B make sure not to boil or over cook them.  If you over cook them it can destroy up to 90 percent of the Folate.  You can eat them raw or gently cook them in a microwave.

Multi-Vitamins are also good at preventing birth defects like heart, brain, spinal, urinary tract defects and limb malformations; Dr. Erickson says that women who take multi-vitamins can stop 5,600 birth defects from happening.  If you want to add a vitamin supplement consult your doctor to see if it will benefit you more in any way.  Women who prefer not to take Folate supplements can get this nutrient from eating cereals that contain 100 percent of the daily value.

Alcohol is very dangerous when you are pregnant.  You should not drink alcohol at all while carrying.  If you drink your baby can develop alcohol fetal syndrome which causes facial and brain abnormalities according to the US Surgeon General. So, it is best to abstain from alcohol if you are considering getting pregnant or are already.

Diabetes can cause a variety of problems when it comes to the development of your child.  It is very important to keep it under control, eat right, exercise, check your sugar and keep up with your check ups.
