While it has long been accepted that consuming large amounts of alcohol during a pregnancy can be extremely harmful to the unborn baby, recent research is showing that consuming a small amount of wine during pregnancy does not seem to be harmful, and in some cases, might even be beneficial.  It seems that there is a lot of conflicting information out there, and it leaves pregnant women wondering: is wine safe to drink during their pregnancy?

A recent UK study looked at cognitive and behavioral issues in 3-year-old children and interviewed their mothers as to alcohol usage during the pregnancy.  As expected, the children of those who drank heavily showed the biggest behavioral problems and lapses in cognitive ability.  What was surprising however was that those mothers who consumed small amounts of wine during pregnancy had children who performed better than those who had abstained altogether.

For the purposes of the study, a small amount, or light drinking was classified as no more than two small drinks (4 oz. of wine, or 10 oz. of weak beer) on one occasion, and no more than two occasions occurring per week.  The study found no difference in effects between women who drank these small amounts somewhat regularly, and those who drank once or twice during the course of their pregnancy.

Since this study is relatively new, major policy-making bodies in the UK, as well as those in the US, still recommend drinking no wine during pregnancy, just to be on the safe side.  In light of the new information however, one major UK body has suggested that it is quite all right for women to drink lightly during the second and third trimesters, but advocate complete abstinence in the first.

With this information, it seems that women, who wish to drink a small amount of wine during pregnancy, can do so without worrying about doing their unborn child harm.  Since the health benefits of drinking moderate amounts of red wine have been well-documented, some women may not wish to give it up altogether during pregnancy.  Of course, if you have any misgivings at all, it’s probably best to abstain altogether.

When in doubt, feel free to ask your doctor, is wine safe? Chances are, she will have her own opinion on the matter, and will be happy to share her reasons with you.  A good OB/GYN will stay current on the latest research and will be able to apply it to your situation. As with so many other things, the matter of drinking wine during pregnancy seems to be resolved with the idea that moderation is key.  If you have any doubts at all about your ability to limit yourself to two or less small glasses no more than twice a week, you might consider abstaining altogether.  If that is in any way a problem, don’t hesitate to talk to your doctor.

Drinking wine during pregnancy is not necessarily a bad thing, so if you can exercise moderation, you can probably do it in a safe manner.

One of the things that concerns most pregnant women is knowing which foods are safe to eat and which ones to avoid.  Most women already assume that they will need to cut back on, or avoid altogether, things like alcohol, tobacco, and various medications.  One food that has led to many questions about its safety during pregnancy is bacon.  There is quite a list of foods that need to be cut back on or avoided altogether; so many women would like to know if they need to avoid bacon when pregnant.

So, should you avoid bacon when pregnant? While most health-care practitioners would caution against overconsumption of any one food, they would also likewise counsel that moderation is generally the best course of action.  Bacon is actually one of a long list of foods that pregnant women need to approach with some caution.  For instance, fish and seafood are generally considered to be healthy foods, but pregnant women need to exercise some caution when consuming seafood because some types contain high levels of mercury, which could be harmful to a fetus.

One thing to consider if you eat bacon when pregnant is the high sodium content.  Bacon is one of the more high-sodium foods out there, and if you eat even a little, you might find yourself retaining water to an uncomfortable degree.  This is often a problem for pregnant women in particular, since some experience a great deal of discomfort from swelling in her extremities.  If this is a problem for you, you may wish to avoid bacon when pregnant in addition to any other high-sodium foods.

Another food-related issue you may wish to consider during your pregnancy is handling and cooking.  While it is always important to practice good hygiene in food preparation, this is far more important when you are pregnant, since any illness you might contract as a result of contaminated food could have severe consequences for your baby.  So, make sure that food is always handled as cleanly as possible, and that all meats and eggs are properly and thoroughly cooked.

It’s up to you if you wish to avoid bacon when pregnant, but be aware, that it, like many other foods that require caution during a pregnancy doesn’t have to be bad for you.  The key is to exercise moderation.  It’s fine to eat bacon when pregnant; just don’t eat large quantities of it every day.

Pregnant women have become accustomed to seeing long lists of things they should and shouldn’t do while pregnant.  One of the biggest areas for concern lies in the area of foods and how they are prepared.  Even though you normally don’t want to ingest things that are bad for you, and don’t want to make yourself sick due to poor food preparation, there is simply a lot more at stake when you are pregnant.  A lot of women wonder if it is safe to consume barbecued foods when pregnant.

So, are barbecued foods safe to eat while pregnant?  Most medical professionals agree that barbecued food should not be a problem for pregnant women, as long as it is prepared properly.  The biggest risk when barbecuing is that improperly prepared food could contain E Coli, salmonella, and campylobacter.  When you are pregnant, your immune system is not as strong as it normally is, and you are more likely to be affected by even a small amount of bacteria.  Keep in mind that even though these bacteria can make you seriously ill, they will not cross the placental barrier and harm the baby.

One somewhat unusual condition to be aware of that you might encounter if you consume barbecued foods when pregnant is toxoplasmosis, which is a parasite-caused infection that usually feels like a mild flu.  Even though you may not get very sick, this can cause brain damage and eye problems in the unborn baby. Keep in mind that this is fairly rare, however.

If you wish to consume barbecued foods when pregnant, here are some tips for you to follow to ensure that you stay as healthy as possible.  One important thing to keep in mind whenever you are handling raw meat is to make sure you store it separately from other foods. Make sure it stays chilled and covered until you are ready to cook it.  It’s especially important to keep raw meat away from foods that won’t require cooking, like salads. Also make sure that meats are completely thawed before cooking.

If you consume barbecued foods while pregnant, some other ways to make sure that they are safely prepared is to make sure that they are thoroughly cooked.  If you are using charcoal, make sure it is white before cooking.  Cook meat until it is no longer pink in the middle and use a meat thermometer to verify that the meat has reached a temperature of at least 160 F/70 C for at least two minutes in the thickest part. If you consume barbecued foods when pregnant, they can be quite safe, as long as you follow the proper precautions.

So, to answer the question: are barbecued foods safe for a pregnant woman, it seems that, as long as you follow the correct procedures when handling and cooking food, you shouldn’t have any problems.  These rules apply, not just when you consume barbecued foods when pregnant; it’s important to prepare it safely and correctly for you and your family’s health in general.
